Assessment
The Student Assessment Guide and Learning Plan describes the evidence required to be competent in this unit. You can track your progress by comparing it against unit requirements and at every stage of your learning and study. You can also get support from your iTAFE mentor and advisor.

Study Guide
There are many ways that you might choose to make your way through the unit. The diagram and suggested sessions (below) will help to plan your learning through the unit Work Effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Straits Islander people.

The sessions outlined below are a suggestion only - you may have another way that you prefer to study. VET Open Online Courses (VOOCs)

Vocational Education and Training online courses are another choice that you can make to assist you to further understand this unit.

Each session is accompanied by a set of colour-coded resources. Please review the resources before attending each VOOC. After the VOOC, you should record your thoughts, ideas and suggestions about the session and share them with other learners. We have provided links to blog, forum and sharing tools but you can also use your own methods. VOOCs are not compulsory but they are an opportunity to gather evidence of your learning by participating with others.

Session 1 -Reflect an awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and cultures in work practices- Blue tiles

This includes
  • Acknowledge and respect the impact of events and issues in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander history during service delivery 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and respect for the diversity of culture, skin and language groups, family structures, art and religion in Indigenous cultures as part of service deliver
A few points to think about for your blog
  • How can a service show acknowledgement and respect of the impact of events and  issues in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander history?
  • Why is it necessary to demonstrate knowledge of and respect for the diversity of culture, skin and language groups, family structures, art and religion in Indigenous cultures as part of service deliver and who will benefit from this knowledge and respect? 

Session 2 -Reflect an awareness of own and other cultural realities in work practices- Pink tiles 

This include
  • Identifying the potential impact of cultural factors on service delivery to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients
  • Addressing cultural realities in order to facilitate full participation in service delivery by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients and/or co-workers
  • Negotiating appropriate strategies to effectively accommodate cultural differences in the workplace
  • Identifying and utilise resources to facilitate effective service delivery in a cross cultural context
  • Ensuring work practices used in a cross cultural context are grounded in an awareness of one's own culture and the cultural realities of others.

A few points to think about for your blog:
  • "Educators who are culturally competent respect multiple cultural ways of knowing, seeing and living" (page 16 EYLF) How do educators gain this respect?
  • What cultural factors should be considered in service delivery to  Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients ?

Session 3 - Communicate effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Reflect cultural safety in workplace and professional relationships    - Purple tiles  


This includes:
  • Identifying communication issues and ensure they are addressed to develop and maintain effective relationships with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients and/or co-workers
  • Employing appropriate communication strategies to support a culturally safe environment for delivery of health services
  • Identifying ineffective and/or inappropriate communication strategies and remodel them to support delivery of health services
  • Identifying and utilising resources to facilitate effective communication within the workplace
  • Engaging the services of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander interpreters, health workers and colleagues as cultural brokers as required to meet duty of care
  • Ensuring workplace and professional relationships are based on mutual respect, tolerance of diversity and a shared understanding of cultural safety
  • Identifying critical issues influencing workplace and professional relationships with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander co-workers and clients
  • Identifying and utilising effective strategies to develop and maintain effective relationships with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander co-workers and clients as appropriate
  • Taking responsibility for revisiting strategies to assist in the resolution of any difficulties, differences or misunderstandings that may occur

  • Why does an educator need to employ appropriate communication strategies when working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients ?
  • What are the benefits of engaging the services of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander interpreters, health workers and colleagues?
  • How would an effective educator build professional relationships based on mutual respect, tolerance of diversity and a shared understanding of cultural safety?
  • What would be the consequences for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander co-workers and clients if educators did not take responsibility for revisiting strategies to assist in the resolution of any difficulties, differences or misunderstandings that may have  occurred?

 Session 4 - Work in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities   - Orange tiles


This includes
  • Developing health service delivery 
  • Ensuring delivery of health care, services and programs reflect culturally safe and appropriate practice
  • Ensuring health care, services and programs encourage self-determination and community control to ensure improved health outcomes
  • Identifying and utilising resources to promote effective partnerships with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, organisations and communities
  • Supporting the development of effective partnerships between staff, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their communities to facilitate accessibility, affordability, accountability, acceptability of appropriate healthcare and workplace service.

  • How can effective partnerships with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, organisations and communities be promoted?
  • What are the benefits of building effective partnerships with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, organisations and communities? Who benefits from the partnerships?
